In-House Registration
The most common self-registration method is the default 1/4 section
method. With this method, in order to register yourself with Alberta
One-Call, you will need to provide a listing of all the quarter sections
containing your pipelines.
There are several problems with this method:
- Difficult to gather and collate the information
- Lack of centralized records
- Acquisitions and mergers add confusion
- Extremely time-consuming
- This method may not be as accurate as the GreenPipe method(see diagram)

The above diagram shows the limitations of providing only a list of
1/4 sections that contain your pipelines.
- A dig location may be only meters away from a pipeline and not
lead to a dig notification thereby exposing the pipeline to risk of a
hit. (refer to the triangle in the diagram)
- A dig location may be on the opposite side of a quarter section,
where the pipeline is not at risk, but the operator would still
receive a call. This can lead to greatly increased costs especially in
an urban setting.
Avoid these
problems with the GreenPipe Registration method >
